Blood Donation 3/25/2010
Did you know?
- Did you know?
- Every 2 seconds someone in the United States needs blood?
- Only 5% of the eligible U.S. population donates blood?
- Healthy Donors are the only source of blood? There are no substitutes.
- One donation saves as many as three lives.
- Healthy adults can donate every 56 days.
- In Idaho alone, the Red Cross is challenged to collect 239 blood donations each business day.
In order to give blood:
- You must be healthy.
- Be at least 17 years old.
- Weigh at least 110 pounds
- Not have donated blood in the last 56 days
- There is no upper age limit as long as you are well with no restrictions or limitations to your activities.
- You may not give blood if you have received notification from the American Red Cross or any other blood organization asking you not to do so.
Apheresis Donations
For those who are able to donate blood, apheresis donation is another donation opportunity. In an apheresis (ay-fur-ee-sis) donation, donors give only select blood components. Apheresis is most commonly used to collect platelets and plasma.
