Why do I need a Social Security Number?
A Social Security number is important because you need it to get a job, collect Social Security benefits and receive other government services. Many other businesses, such as banks and credit companies, also ask for your social security number.
How do I get a Social Security Number?
Social Security Numbers are issued through the Social Security Administration. An application can be obtained from your local Social Security Administration office or by downloading the application form from Social Security Administration’s website at: www.ssa.gov . To prevent online identity theft, the application can not be submitted online. The completed application must be mailed or hand delivered to your local Social Security Administration office.
Name Changes / Card Replacements:
To change your name on your Social Security Card or to replace a lost or stolen Social Security Card, you must complete Form SS-5 which can be obtained from your local Social Security office or downloaded from the Social Security Administration website at: www.ssa.gov .
