The Idaho System of Care 6/2010

What is the Idaho System of Care?

The Idaho System of Care is a joint effort by child-serving agencies and organizations, such as the Idaho Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health and the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, to meet the needs of children with mental health disorders. These disorders may disrupt life at home, school, and in the community.

The Idaho System of Care helps maximize the potential of children, youth and their families for full involvement and inclusion in their community. The Idaho System of Care works to educate policy makers, professional organizations, legislators, and the public about the needs of children with mental health disorders and their families. Local children’s mental health councils are a focal point in communities for identifying resources and doing community outreach.

Children affected by mental health disorders have unique needs that require unique services. The Idaho System of Care teaches respect for their rights, preferences, values, strengths, and cultural backgrounds and that they should receive the support necessary to remain with their families. The Idaho System of Care provides leadership in the field of children’s mental health by developing human and financial resources to meet its goals. It also promotes the rights to full citizenship, support and access to community-based services for all children with mental health disorders and their families.
