Idaho Fish Consumption Advisory Program 4/26/2010
What is the Idaho Fish Consumption Advisory Program?
The Idaho Fish Consumption Advisory Program (IFCAP) informs Idahoans about possible contamination of water bodies that may impact fish and human health. By testing fish tissue samples for various contaminants, IFCAP is able to advise the public about how to safely consume fish from Idaho water bodies. Idaho's fish consumption advisory program began in 2001. The program's advisory group is comprised of representatives from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, the Idaho Department of Agriculture, the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality, Idaho Department of Fish and Game, the U.S. Geological Survey and the Governor's office.
What does an Idaho Fish Consumption Advisory mean?
IFCAP tests fish from different water bodies for chemicals and naturally occurring elements. A fish advisory for a specific watershed does not mean you should stop fishing in a favorite lake or river. It simply means you should monitor the amount of certain types of fish you eat.
